Micropropagation Agar-Type I

Micropropagation Agar-Type I Agar Powder is a natural product, derived from Gracillaria, a family of red seaweeds – Rhodophycae. Gracilaria was once viewed as unacceptable for agar production, due to the low gel quality. But in the 1950’s, by treating the seaweed with alkali before extraction produced an agar with a higher gel quality. For some time now, Agar Powder has been utilized to solidify media in plant tissue culture. Development of tissue culture will be greatly impacted by the type of agar used – both purity and cost will play significant roles in research or production applications.

Phytoblend

Phytoblend is a proprietary blend by Caisson Labs, and comparable with Phytoagar™, and have become a very popular choice for many of our agar powder products. Plant agar has many advantages to bacteriological agar. 12g of bacteriological agar is required in microbe media, but only 7g of plant agar is required for plant tissue culture. Both may be used for plant tissue culture, but most seem to favor plant agar for its rigorous testing and screening for plant propagation operations.

Micropropagation Agar-Type II

Micropropagation Agar-Type II Agar Powder is a natural product, derived from Gelidium, a family of red seaweeds – Rhodophycae. Gelidium commonly produces a have higher gel quality agar powder than agars produced from Gracilaria. Geledium is a little, slow growth seaweed plant. Originally collected from the ocean, it has been successfully grown in biological tanks or ponds, however, it has not been economically feasible. Since agar materials are biologically sourced, the product can vary from batch to batch. Caisson Labs’ Agar Powders are rigorously tested and screened to deliver the highest possible quality.
